About Hallam Teaching School Alliance

Hallam Teaching School Alliance was one of the first cohort of Teaching Schools established in 2011. Based at Notre Dame High School in Sheffield, an outstanding school since 2008, Hallam Teaching School Alliance:

  • Offers high quality primary and secondary teacher training through The Sheffield SCITT – book onto an open event.
  • Hosts the Sheffield Associate Research School, working alongside Huntington Research School to promote evidence-informed practice in our area.
  • Supports Newly Qualified Teachers and RQTs, acting as a Delivery Partner for the Ambition Institute Early Career Programme.
  • Runs the South Yorkshire Maths Hub, working with over 400 schools in the region to develop Mathematics teaching – are you involved?
  • Runs the South and East Yorkshire Science Learning Partnership, offering comprehensive Science professional development at all Key Stages – join our networks and see what is on offer.
  • Delivers training on behalf of the York Computing Hub.
  • Are actively involved in producing and promoting anti-racism educational resources.

John Coats

Director of Teaching School

John is an experienced school leader with previous positions including timetabling and curriculum leadership, heading up pastoral and safeguarding and whole school responsibility for pupil progress. John has wide-ranging experience of working with colleagues in other schools and is also a trained Pupil Premium Reviewer. The work of our Teaching School remains steadfastly focussed on what ends up happening in the classroom – John remains a Math teacher at heart and still has a weekly class to teach.

Jenna McGee

Involved with our SCITT since its inception, Jenna leads a large team of mentors, subject leads and school ITT coordinators across our alliance. Our SCITT is expanding rapidly as word spreads about our teacher training offer. As we grow, quality assurance of our School Direct partners is becoming increasingly important to ensure that the standards that we have insisted on to bring about our success are applied consistently across our partnership – quality assurance is an increasingly important part of Jenna’s role.

Jen Benzies

SCITT Assistant Lead

Like Jenna, Jen has been involved with our SCITT since its inception. Jen has extensive experience as both mentor, subject specialist and school ITT coordinator and has recently moved into our management team in response to the increasing number of School Direct providers signing up to our course.

Vicky John Lewis

South Yorkshire Maths Hub Lead

Vicki is Deputy Head at Hayfield Lane Primary School in Doncaster. We are delighted to have Vicki leading the South Yorkshire Maths Hub – she has been involved with the Hub from the outset, most recently leading the Primary Teaching for Mastery programme within the Hub where we have had great success in engaging schools with the programme.

Tara Webster

Maths Hub Project Coordinator

This is the lady who knows everything about Maths Hub! Efficient should be her middle name. One of the first points of contact for teachers, local maths leaders and schools to speak with regarding the hub, you'll be well looked after in her hands.

Tim Clark

Science Learning Partnership Lead

A former Head of Science in an Outstanding Teaching School, and with a wealth of experience supporting colleagues from ITE all the way through to Heads of Department, Tim is both physically (at 6 foot 6!) and metaphorically a big part of our Science Team. Tim has led primary and secondary Science CPD networks across the region for a number of years. Importantly, Tim is still a practising classroom teacher which makes him best-placed to support colleagues with up-to-date pedagogical practice and changes to the secondary Science curriculum.

Alastair Gittner

Research Lead

Alastair's knowledge of educational research is unparalleled! He helps teachers in schools across Sheffield engage with research evidence to improve their practice and so help the outcomes for all students.

Jenni Monach

Science Learning Partnership Co-Lead

We are delighted to have secured Jenni as the most recent addition to our Science team. As a primary science teacher of the year 2012, Jenni’s reputation precedes her. Jenni brings outstanding classroom practice and curriculum knowledge at primary level and is responsible for coordinating our Science CPD offer across KS1-2.

Keith Barna

Commercial Manager

Bean counter extra-ordinaire or just a very safe pair of hands! Although a significant amount of the work we do as a Teaching School doesn’t actually involve any money changing hands between schools, a formal agreement is always good practice where schools are committing time or resources which is where Keith usually comes in.

Sarah Billingham

Teaching School Office Manager

First port of call for general enquiries and an organisational guru, Sarah ensures the 'engine room' of the Teaching School runs smoothly.

Anna Shirley

Communications Manager

Anna comes from a graphic design background and is here to shout about all of our activities and achievements, daily updates on our various social media feeds, monthly newsletters and keeping our website up to date and relevant.

Katie Askew

Teaching School Senior Administrator

Our SCITT is growing rapidly as Teaching Schools across the region hear about our Teacher Training offer and like the sound of it enough to ask to come on board as School Direct partners. All this needs a competent person behind the scenes to manage the administration – step forward Katie!
